Aniva is being built as a place where people from different fields can work side by side: researchers, graduate students and students, technology teams, creators of educational content and documentary films, industry partners, and volunteers.

RESEARCHERS
If you have a research question that our location is well suited to explore, we’d be glad to hear from you. We welcome individual researchers and research teams for both short- and long-term collaborative programs — from week-long expeditions to seasonal or multi-year projects.
We are open to discussing laboratory upgrades and the development of research infrastructure for specific projects, where specialized conditions are required and the work aligns with the station’s scientific program.
Since 2023, we have held the annual Krilion Research Grant Competition, supporting selected research projects with both infrastructure and funding.

Field training, internships, thesis or doctoral research — we welcome students, graduate students, and early-career professionals in the natural sciences and related fields.
The format of participation depends on the program and agreements with the partner university. It may include university field training, an individual internship, participation in an expedition, or an independent research project based at the station.
Once a year, Sakhalin hosts the Floating University Programme — an intensive program for students and early-career researchers, with opportunities to continue their work through marine expeditions, field training, and research projects at Aniva Biological Station.

Aniva operates as an R&D hub and testing ground for technologies that require real marine conditions. The station can be used to test equipment prototypes, new sensors, marine and climate monitoring systems, underwater robotics, mariculture methods, biotechnology solutions, unmanned marine and aerial logistics, and autonomous energy systems.
For industry partners, we can provide laboratory space and equipment, small vessels with experienced operators, project infrastructure support, dive coordination and assistance with underwater operations, as well as long-term monitoring and equipment maintenance by qualified personnel.
For research institutions, we are open to joint research programs, data exchange, shared use of infrastructure, and participation in grant competitions.

Aniva Marine Station works in coordination with federal and regional authorities and is open to participating in public programs in the fields of marine science, ecology, climate, aquaculture, the bioeconomy, and protected natural areas.
We are interested in contributing to national projects, regional development programs, initiatives for the establishment and management of protected areas, educational programs, and infrastructure projects related to the sustainable development of Sakhalin and the Russian Far East.

We are open to working with the media and, whenever possible, welcome film crews to the station for television, documentary, and science communication projects.
Aniva has its own media team, an extensive archive of photo and video materials, and dozens of stories to tell — about the sea, science, construction, people, wildlife, weather, expeditions, and life on a remote coastline.
We enjoy telling these stories, showing what happens at the station, and sharing our work with a wider audience. If you have an idea for a collaborative project, get in touch and we’ll be happy to discuss the format.

The station is being built in part by people who come to us without a formal scientific background. If you are interested in the sea, Sakhalin’s natural environment, and hands-on outdoor work, there are ways to combine all three at Aniva.
We welcome volunteers seasonally for specific tasks: assisting with fieldwork, contributing to daily life at the station, supporting the kitchen and expeditions, and helping with construction and maintenance work. Experienced divers may take part in diving operations, while photographers, filmmakers, and other creative professionals can contribute to photo and video projects.
The main requirements are being over 18, being in good physical condition, independence, responsibility, and readiness to live outside the comforts of an urban environment. Previous expedition experience is an advantage, but not a requirement.
